David Gerstein is considered to be one of the most creative and innovative artists in the world today.
He has exhibited around the world including London, Paris, Frankfurt,Berlin, Rome, Singapore, New York, Tel Aviv and the list goes on. He belongs to a group of painters, all top craftsmen, whom you come across, and whose expanding body of work - increasingly filling the country - is worthy of close scrutiny.
It is difficult to think of another artist like David Gerstein, whose work in recent years has gained such prominence on the local scene. Some of his works have been chosen to appear on huge billboards, as human and aesthetic images that aim to catch the eye and engage the heart, and to promote companies like Isracard and the First International Bank.

ABOUT THE ART

Once in a while, during the natural flow of life, we find ourselves taking part in someone else's moment of glory.

David Gerstein belongs to a group of painters, all top craftsmen, whom you come across, and whose expanding body of work - increasingly filling the country - is worthy of close scrutiny.

It is difficult to think of another artist like David Gerstein, whose work in recent years has gained such prominence on the local scene: his pieces are regularly exhibited at the Rosenfeld Gallery in the heart of Dizengoff, one of Tel Aviv's main streets; reproductions of his works have been published in all Israeli newspapers; some of his works have been chosen to appear on huge billboards, as human and aesthetic images that aim to catch the eye and engage the heart, and to promote companies like Isracard and the First International Bank; his monumental statues adorn Israeli cities; a playground of his invention continues to delight the children of Jerusalem; the Hebrew University ordered an ambitious and challenging project from Gerstein: the design of various statues which will symbolize - based on criteria of good taste, common sense and a high level of communication - the various University institutions and faculties; a television show has chosen to decorate its broadcasting studio with his works, in the hope that the pieces' tremendous popularity will attract viewers to the show; some of his paintings hang in the Israel Museum's collection and the Children's Wing of the museum exhibits his statues; and many more.

The range of circumstances, both artistic and popular, under which the Israeli public has been exposed to Gerstein's work in the past years, i.e. the statues and cut-outs, as well as his overflowing presence, speak of the community's deep need for this type of creation: The work of a virtuoso artist, who is neither theoretical nor topical in the publicist, period-related sense, but "simply an artist" in the superb sense of the word. A painter who has fine-tuned the technique, temperament, shapes, images and coloring which are identified with him: a painter who produces simple, charming, Matisse-like decorative objects, using his unique inventive technique and employing a Fauve-like coloring and sensuality. Good-hearted objects that convey a certain irony and humor towards "Israeliness", which grows more and more convoluted and yet for him, at least, remains simple and innocent, as it was during his childhood in the 50's. Perhaps not so different than the Israeliness experienced by the first generation of the Land of Israel painters, i.e. Nahum Gutman and Reuben Rubin.

Gerstein, a self-confident painter, gazes with a semi-ironic smile at our fervor-ridden reality. As though everything around him were merely atoms engaged in a mad race, which in itself generates reality, and if not for that race everything would plunge into black holes or madhouses. Reality as a pointless race is the subject of several of his works, such as: "Marathon" and "The Great Marathon".

In 1970, after ten years of study in Jerusalem, Paris and New York, Gerstein began exhibiting his literary-figurative paintings, which depicted autobiographical scenes, the Tel Aviv balcony scene, as well as home, mood and atmosphere pictures that were engraved on his mind. The seventies were critical years on the Israeli and international art scene. The art establishment adopted Minimalism and Conceptualism, which were created by artists of Gerstein's generation. But Gerstein resolutely refused to join the hegemonic stream, and against all odds offered literary paintings, replete with expression and bound to the perception of art as object.

המכון לאמנות הוקם על ידי עיריית בת-ים בסוף שנות ה-60 והוא שימש כבית ספר לאמנות מהנחשבים שבארץ, שבו לימדו ולמדו מטובי אמני ישראל. לקראת תחילת שנות ה-90 התמקד המכון במתן חוגי אמנות שונים לקהל הרחב.
עם כניסת ראש העיר שלומי לחיאני לכהונתו, התרחבה פעילותו האמנותית באופן משמעותי וניכר, שהוא שוקק חיים ופעילויות כל השבוע ומנוהל ע"י האמן שי פרדו, יו"ר אגודת הציירים והפסלים, מנהל ואוצר הגלריה והמכון.
במסגרת המכון פועלים היום חוגי אמנות בתחומים שונים ובהם מעבדת צילום, סדנת פיסול, קדרות מחלקה חדשה לרישום וציור, ומועדון צילום פעיל.
לצד המכון הוקמה גלריה חדשה אשר משמשת אמנים רבים מכל התחומים לתצוגה ופעילויות ועד כה הוצגו בה עשרות תערוכות ומיזמי אמנות.

The Collective & The Collection Project

איסוף בעולם של אמנות קשור בדרך כלל למצב של מתן חסות או הגנה אמיתית ופילנתרופית של אמנות. איסוף אמנות נוטה להיראות כתרגיל אליטיסטי ולעתים רחוקות כפעילות המונית.

הקולקציה והקולקטיב הוא פרויקט שנולד בשנת 2006 במדריד, ספרד. הרעיון המרכזי וסכמת ההתפתחות שלו מבוססים על החלפת עבודות באופן אופקי (במיוחד בעבודות הצילום) בין אמנים מרחבי העולם אשר מעוניינים להשתתף. האינטראקציה בין שני הצדדים המבצעים את החלפת העבודות יוצרת סוג חדש של תקשורת בין-אישית, המגשרת בין אמנים מארצות ותרבויות שונות.

הפרויקט נוצר על ידי נעמה שריד מלטה וקונרדו רפאל מלטה, שיזמו והובילו את הרעיון של יצירת אוסף אמנות דרך הרשת החברתית, אשר מטרתו להפוך עם הזמן לאוסף קבוע במוזיאון קיים או שיבנה לשם כך. רוב האמנים הם מקהילת האינטרנט של Flickr. נכון לאוקטובר 2011 האוסף מכיל קרוב ל-400 יצירות ממדינות כגון סין, אירן, הודו, נורווגיה, סלובקיה, איסלנד ועוד.

כפרויקט, TC & TC (The collective & the collection) שואף לא רק ליצור קבוצה נבחרת של יצירות אמנות, אלא גם לקדם את האמנים הכלולים בחוויה הזו, אשר רבים מהם לא יכולים לעשות זאת בארץ המוצא שלהם. פרסומים ותערוכות נמצאים בקו העניין של מנהיגי הפרויקט, המתמקדים תמיד בפעילות לא מסחרית וללא מטרות רווח אשר תסייע לאמנים אלו להמשיך בפעילותם האמנותית.

The Collective & the Collection

Collecting in the world of art is usually linked to the condition of sponsorship or philanthropic real safeguard of arts. Collecting art tends to be seen as an exercise in elite and rarely as a mass activity.

The Collective & the Collection is a project born in 2006 in Madrid, Spain. Its central idea and development scheme are based in horizontal exchange of works (especially photography) between artists from all over the world who wish to participate. In the same way, it involves the creation of communication bridges between various artists who pass to be united by a dialogue and a reality, embodied in their works.

The project was created by Naama Sarid-Maleta' and Conrado Rafael Maleta', being only initiators and promoters more stable until today. The idea in the long run should end with the inclusion of all works in an existing museum or in a newly created. Most artists are from the internet community of flickr. Until October/2011 the collection has near 400 works from countries like China, Iran, Slovakia, Iceland and Cuba.

As a project, TC&TC is not only in the direction of creating a selected group of art works, but as well aims to do as many promotions as possible for the artists that are included in that experience. Publications and exhibitions are in the line of interest of the leaders of the project and always focused in non commercial actions that help to each member in the long journey that is to create arts.

Gebo Art Space was established in 2007 as a studio-gallery for Johanan Herson and Marlen Ferrer to explore their identities as artists. Rapha'l Barbibay joined the them as the house curator and together they created a dynamic environment offering established artists and new talents an opportunity to show their works.
One of the principles of Gebo is to offer artists from the periphery an opportunity to exhibit in the centre of Tel Aviv, the heart of Israeli art world. Gebo Art Space has added the offices of engineering and design to the gallery in a unique open space environment with the intention of creating a dialogue between art and design. Raphal Barbibay,founder of Art Connections Israel , having made his home base at Gebo Art Space offers international artists and Israeli artists opportunities to exhibit here in Israel and abroad.
